When your child is sick with a cold or the flu you feel bad for them because you know they can't be helped with many kinds of adult meds. When we feel sick we know how bad it is and when our children get sick we know it is worse for them because they don't understand about germs and all that. They just feel really bad.
There are things you can do that don't require over the counter meds or a trip to the Doctor's office when you already know what it is that your child has. That is a waste of money the Doctor just pockets. Now if it were something more than just a cold then go ahead and make an appointment. A cold and the flu will last about a week, maybe a day or two longer. If it lasts longer than that then make an appointment with your child's Pediatrician.
Also remember a cold and the flu are viruses and most antibiotics don't help them. They only administer them to hopefully prevent a bacterial infection if one should arise. This doe not cure colds or flu. Too many antibiotics in the body and used too much can be detrimental to the health of the individual.
Here are some remedies and helps to make your little one feel better.

Here are some remedies and helps to make your little one feel better.
- Add moisture to the room. Vaporizers are nice but if the air is too moist you then have another problem and that is mold and mildew and you don't want that.
- Cool Sprays sometimes cool the room down. You can use them and set them to 50%
- Air out the house and the room where your child is staying. Yes even if it is 30 degrees outside. Wrap them up to keep them warm and put a fan in a window and open the windows and let it air out for about an hours. Then close the windows and turn the heat back on. Colds and flu tend to happen in the winter because we close the germs in the house. Let the sun in.
- You can also sit them outside in the sun for 15-20 minutes each day. For one the sun provides Vitamin "D" and they get aired out themselves. Of course wrap them up when they are outside.
- Vick's in the vaporizer will help with the breathing and Vicks Vapor rub will help loosen them up and it also heats the chest. Colds and flu do not like added heat. They have a set temperature they like and when you raise it they die.
- Garlic is a natural antibiotic and will help with the cold and flu too. Give the child the pill form so they don't have to taste it all day. 2 pills 3 times a day. Kyolic is the best brand for this and it is in the vitamin isle at most stores.
- A spoonful of honey will soothe their soar throat. You can give the a few times a day.
- Wrap a scarf around their neck. This increases the heat in the child's throat so that the flu and cold viruses are killed by the heat.
- Lots of hot homemade chicken noodle soup. The added heat soothes the throat. Chicken noodle soup is a good soother and if made from scratch it can have many more of the benefits that canned soup has. For one Chicken Soup usually has garlic in it. Increase this in your home made soup. Garlic is an antibiotic. Onion also has sulfur in it. Put lots of onions in your Chicken Noodle Soup. You can also not add and salt to the soup which canned soup has lots of, making it a better option than the canned variety.
- It is wise to flush or burn in the fireplace if you have one going the tissues used to blow their noses and these harbor the viruses and spread them from person to person.
- Lots of Vitamin "C". 10,000 mg of it. You can get it in chewable form. They can be eaten all throughout the day. They taste like candy and you shouldn't have a problem with them taking these.
- To reduce fever put them in cool water in a tub or dip and wring out wash cloths in cold water and put them on the back of their necks and on their forehead.
I hope your little one is feeling much better, but it really is a waiting game. I, myself, have tried all those things on the market that say that they make the cold or flu shorter and they really don't work. They still take about a week and a half before the cold or flu is gone and sometimes the cough will stick around for a month before it is all gone.
Lot's of Tender Loving Care to your little one and they will be better in no time.
